Odds N Ends

A few other photographs from the abandoned log cabin area

Sartain Plantation

Sartain-Plantation-webOff a county road between Troup and Arp Texas lies the Sartain Plantation. I have heard it is haunted, I do not know as I did not get to go inside. To me the photograph looks “cockeyed” but I checked the level on my camera. The house just slants a little bit. According to the Texas Historical Commission “John Grayson Sartain (1834-1905) and his wife Eliza Elvira (Gaut) (1837-1918) bought land here in 1868 and began construction of this frame home using timber from their property. Later, neighbors helped place the house on a sled and used oxen and mules to drag it 1/4 mile to this location. In 1913 Sartain’s son Lee and his wife Cora (Wilson) bought the farm and the family moved into a tent in the front yard while a second story was being constructed. Lee Sartain served as an Arp banker and continued to raise cotton and peaches on this farm, owned by the family for over a century.”

Abandoned Log Cabin

Log-Cabin---Troup3-webA very interesting place, I didn’t explore it like I would have liked. It sits back in the woods and snakes are very active right now. Yes I have issues with snakes

A Giant Oak

A friend emailed my about an abandoned log cabin in the eastern part of Smith County. I found the cabin and got several good shots which I will start posting tomorrow. This oak tree is what really fascinated me, it was huge, and just look at the shape of it’s limbs. If you look at the lower left you can see part of the cabin. So which one do you like?

Oh so close

June-Bug-web

Talk about a bad day, this june bug had one. I was doing some yardwork when a friend and I saw this june bug, I just passed by it then she said to look closer. It must have been flying by when it impaled itself on the barb.

Chilling by the River

There are 13 school days left and I’m ready for a break. I enjoy teaching but after the STAAR testing it’s hard to stay focused for teachers and students.

Seriously thinking of going back to Beavers Bend and just relax. Love the “U” shape that the trees make along the river banks.

Frontier Red Hill Cemetery

Frontier Red Hill Cemetery is in southwest Van Zandt County here in Texas. It dates back to 1856 when two sisters died two days apart. There are several confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery too. There are numerous graves of young children, some just a day old, some three to four years of age at their passing. Goes to show how tough times and disease ravaged the land. One family had buried 4 children in a 5 year span. The cemetary is actually very well caried for by a volunteer group and is used to this day, although not often.

Thanks to Jerry at Phoport for writing this article on setting up an image gallery as I had no clue.

So my little assistant got sick Sunday evening, had to carry him to the emergency vet. They think he got into some ant poison. He was having tremors, and couldn’t keep his balance, it was distrubing for me. He spent Sunday night at the clinic, I picked him up Monday morning and carried him to his regular vet. He is doing better but I’m watching him closely. The ER vet charged enough I can forget about the Lee filter system I wanted, oh well. These are just a couple of photos of him lounging about one afternoon while I was learning my Canon 6D.
